Edit: It looks like we’ve got the feed issue fixed, so you should be getting updates in your reader again.

Please, let me know if something changes! : )

My dad is from Colorado rather than the great state of Texas, but for as long as I can remember he has called shorts, “short pants.”

Why?

I don’t know.

Maybe it has to do with the oh-so-popular t-shirt (hat? bumper sticker?) I seem to remember him sporting that said something to the effect of: “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as quick as I could.”

Because it just sounds Southern, doesn’t it? (“Hey, Junior, go change out of your short pants and put your britches on ‘cause we’re goin’ fishin’!”)

But I don’t really know anybody from around here that says it. So, maybe it’s just a Dad-ism.

Either way, thanks for the post title inspiration, Dad, because Short Sleeves and Short Pants sounds way better than Short Sleeves and…Shorts (kinda leaves you hanging, doesn’t it?).

OKAY.

That commercial was brought to you courtesy of Abbie’s random brain ramblings, but now it’s time for what you guys actually showed up for today.

And that would be..

THRIFTED OR GRIFTED!

So, what is T+G?

It’s a silly little fashion game I came up with in which I wear two similar ensembles, and you test your thrifting savvy by deciding whether an outfit is:

A) 100% Thrifted: (adj.)—previously loved and therefore ridiculously cheap…aka Secondhand

OR

B) 100% Grifted: (adj.)—swindled or cheated…aka Retail (NOTICE THE “R” IN GRIFTED! SOMETIMES, I GET EMAILS FROM PEOPLE WONDERING WHY I DO A GAME ABOUT “GIFTED” CLOTHES! : ))

…and then you vote and leave me comments telling why you chose the one you did!

(Disclaimer: No, I don’t actually think you’re getting ripped off every time you pay retail, but I do believe that if you can’t tell the difference, you shouldn’t have to pay for it).

If you’re a Thrifted or Grifted pro, then you know the drill—squint, cock your head, haul out the magnifying glass…whatever it takes for you to feel fully satisfied that you have sufficiently scoured each outfit for telltale signs of thriftedness (WRINKLES DON’T COUNT!) and then comment away telling me why you chose which one you did.

The commenter I find most entertaining (there’s nothing fair or random about it! ; )) will get 5 free entries into our upcoming giveaway (THIS FRIDAY : )).

Ready?

O-KAY (and that, folks, is as close to a cheerleader as I will ever get).

Is it…?

EXHIBIT A

IMG_3043

Why do I suddenly feel as if Steven Tyler would be very jealous of my hair in this pic? I need a trim!

IMG_3046

Remember that nap I was hankering to take yesterday? It kind of looks like I’m getting a brief one in here!

IMG_3048

Pardon the awkward, up close shot. I was just trying to make sure you could see the polka dots and the ruffles.

or…

EXHIBIT B

IMG_3056

I realize it’s a bit hard to tell what the colors are because of all the shadows and sunlight dappling, but my shorts are pale pink, and my shirt is dark blue/gray.

IMG_3054IMG_3049

Again with the strange, close-up shirt shot. (And yes, I realize that’s the world’s fakest-looking smile).

So, have you made your decision?

If so…vote!

I’ll leave the voting open until 8 AM tomorrow since we’re getting started a little later than usual.  It’s always fun to see what other people think, how they vote, and what they say (especially if you feel like you’re a thrifter extraordinaire and have it nailed for sure and want to know if your friends can spot it like you can!), so feel free to be liberal with the Facebook sharing/tweeting.

The more the merrier!

Which outfit is 100% Thrifted?

  1. I said A, because in the close up of the polka dotted shirt, there are a few flyaways on the sleeve hem that look like something may have been removed.
Also, in B, the navy shirt doesn’t look faded, so it might be new.

  2. Oh, oh, oh- I love gifted or thrifted! It’s like a little game show and we get to play!!
OK- so I say B is thrifted. Why? Because no one would donate a polka dotted shirt as cute as the one you’re wearing in A! Duh!

  3. B is thrifted. My reasoning: I tried on a shirt just like that at goodwill 2 weeks ago. Not that size, of course, but basically the same shirt.

  4. I picked b, this is very hard but I like this game. I feel like I have seen the shirt in the b outfit so that is why I picked it . The shoes and shorts in A are right on for spring trends- but I have no idea:)

  5. I think A is the thrifted look. The shirt is pretty unique which makes me think it is less likely to be mass produced and I agree about the shoe fit. Both the looks are really great.

  6. I agree with Kjaminkc on the shoes in B, so that’s what I picked. But you do look adorable in both outfits…

  7. Thinking its b! Based on the shoes….no offense, but they look like a pair I gave away once upon a time!

  8. I love the second look the best and since I love pink shorts and thrifted clothes, I’m chosing B to be thrifted. I also love the green bracelet on option A and I think that outfit is the grifted.

  9. Shirt # 1 looks slightly snug across your chest. And the belt loops are double stitched which usually means higher quality then say, old navy. My guess is #1 is thrifted.

  10. I say A is thrifted because it doesn’t look like it at all to me. Neither does the other one, but I don’t like dark blue.

  11. It looks like in the first pic of outfit A the shoes are too big, and you seem to have a habit of buying cute, thrifted shoes even if they don’t quite fit…so A it is! As Dolly Parton said “In a good shoe, I wear a size six, but a seven feels so good, I buy a size eight.” (And if the shoes are too big, I want dibs for the next “shop my closet” Love them! 🙂

  12. A!! I remember wearing shoes like the ones in “A” a long time ago… and those straps weren’t made for walking! So, I am guessing the previous owner who donated/sold those super cute, but ankle cutting shoes is secretly thrilled that her shoes not only are off of her feet, but on someone who makes them look like a million “comfortable” bucks! You rocked the outfit. 🙂

  13. I’m going with “A”. I am LOVING “B” and the thought of you finding that outfit by thrifting just makes me jealous. : )

  14. I pick A…cause it’s cuter. And you are sneaky. And I figure, if I keep picking A eventually I have to be right. P.S. You look like a Wisconsin girl…I thought Texans were all tan?

  15. I’m voting for outfit A. I think they are both too cute. Your so tricky, and that’s the only reason why I’m voting for outfit A. With the super cute polka dots and ruffles that I can certainly never find at any second hand store, I know you must have been able to find it. Just to brag of course. ; )

  16. B is thrifted. No doubt about it. Why? Because you just look cuter in it and being the thrifty goddess that you are, clearly the cuter of the two is thrifted. Duh.

I love hearing from you guys!
