A few months ago, a longtime reader, Miranda, contacted me about doing a review of some Younique mineral pigment eye shadows, brushes, and their, well, unique brand of mascara called 3D Fiber Lashes.

Here’s the deal: I’ve always loved makeup. And I’m actually decent at applying it. I’ve done makeup for weddings and other special events for close friends. But I have zero formal training, so really, I just use a few basic guidelines and wing it the rest of the way.

I say that as a big fat disclaimer lest any makeup artists or otherwise expertly skilled beauty sorts think that I am in any way claiming “thou shalt apply thine eyeliner thus.”

As far as the Younique products I received, I basically played around with applying them in different layers, order, etc. until I found a look I liked for daytime.

Here are the items are received in my kit:

They all fit nicely in this handy-dandy hard case.

I don’t actually wear that much makeup on a daily basis, usually just sticking to mascara, one shade of eye shadow, powder foundation, and lip gloss. So I don’t usually wear more than one color of pigment at a time (my favorite is Confident) unless I’m going on a date or to church or somewhere else special.

But for Easter Sunday, I wanted to try something a little more multi-dimensional.

Here’s how I started out with no eye makeup on.

My eyelashes are naturally inky black, but I still prefer to wear at least a coat of mascara when I go out in public.

Which brings us to…

And then, on top of that, I applied:

lashes

The difference can be as dramatic or subdued as you want. In this case, the effect is subtle, but it’s definitely a noticeably fuller look.

If you read yesterday’s post, then you know that our Easter morning was pretty packed, which means that I didn’t get a chance to take pictures in the morning.

But I’m glad for that because you’ll get to see how well the colors stay in place.

I did use the primer first, and after a good 10 hours of wear, here’s how my eye makeup looked.

No smudging, no fading. I was really impressed.

In case you’re wondering where I used what:

My favorite things about these eye products are definitely the brushes and the 3D Fiber Lashes.

I’ve never applied my eye shadow with brushes, at least not decent ones that didn’t shed all over me (I told you I’m no expert), and these are super soft, the fibers stay put, and they distribute the color evenly.

The 3D lashes are fun for giving your eyelashes more oomph, but they do take some fiddling with to avoid clumps. There are lots of good, easy-to-follow tips on getting them just so, though, so they’re definitely worth the effort.

I do like the pigments a lot, but it does seem to take a lot more of them to get the same level of color I’m used to (you can wet them slightly for a smoother, more intense application, but I never quite mastered that), so sometimes I skip them in favor of a traditional eye shadow when I don’t have time to apply them just right.

The colors are beautiful, though (and there are TONS to choose from), so even if you only saved them for special occasions or just swiped one color across your lids for a natural look with a little bit of sparkle (like I did last night when I needed some color for BODYCOMBAT launch), they would work great.

Of course, this is all well and good for me, but the best part is that one of you lucky folks will get a chance to win some Younique eye products for yourself.

Miranda is being super-nice and offering one of you:

  1. Do you have any recommendations for regular eye shadow that lasts as long as the pigments? I agree they are fussy and when I’m running late in the morning I need something quick but that can last through my work day. I haven’t found the right thing yet! Hoping you have a suggestion! Thanks!

    1. Other than these pigments, I just go super-cheap. Like E.L.F. super-cheap. 🙂 I don’t need particularly long-lasting coverage, so I don’t worry too much about how long they’ll stay on since I’m usually not wearing makeup during the day. Sorry to not be much help!

  2. I just ordered the 3D lashes on Sat. I hope I like them and they look as good on me as they do on you!!

I love hearing from you guys!
