For a variation on last week’s butterfly mobile, I decided to put together a whimsical butterfly wreath just so I could link up with the Nester’s wreath party today:

What you’ll need:

    • Wreath (duh…not much of a wreath tute without one of these!) – mine is 13” Styrofoam
    • Ribbon – I used 4 yds of 1.5” and had just enough…barely
    • Butterfly punch
    • Pretty scrapbook/magazine paper
    • Stapler
    • (Optional) Ribbon flowers (tutorial coming on Tuesday!)

1. Staple the end of your ribbon to your wreath

2. Wrap your ribbon around your wreath:

3. Whew! Just enough. Staple the tail of your ribbon to the underside of your wreath.

4. Punch out lots of butterflies (this actually maybe should have been Step 1, but I’m going to assume that anyone with opposable thumbs—if you’re a cat reading this…sorry, you’re out of luck—can figure out the punching process).

5. Staple your butterflies at whatever angle and in whichever direction you deem best. The only tips I might give you here are to press really firmly or else you’ll end up redoing a lot (not that I would know this from personal experience or anything) and to make sure that you staple vertically to avoid constricting the butterflies’ wing movement (just because you’re ruthlessly spearing them through the middle doesn’t mean their wings shouldn’t be free).

6. Give each butterfly a little squeeze (so they know you still love them) by pinching the wings toward each other. This will give them more of a three dimensional look.

7. If you’re adding flowers (which you really should; butterflies love them, you know), leave a space for them.

8. I put alligator clips on the back of my ruffled ribbon flowers so that I could just slide them under one of the ribbon layers. Simple and temporary. Me likey.

Sorry if I just blew up your computer screen with my crazy yellow fabric background.

8. Here’s the end product. Now we just have to find somewhere fun to hang it.

9. Ooooooh. How ‘bout a funky canary yellow chandy that I just happen to have hanging in my breakfast nook. Yeah, that’ll work.

And there you have it, folks: the perfect, fanciful addition to a themed dinner party, a little girl’s room, or just your everyday décor.

Don’t forget to come back for Try-it Tuesday when I will show you how I made my ruffled ribbon flowers, which just so happen to be included in The September Giveaway (top right sidebar). Check it out if you haven’t already!
