Did you know that sometimes I get in strange moods and just want to do something different?

Did you know that today is one of those days?

Did you furthermore know that that means that I’m starting the first thought of every paragraph of this post with some variation of the phrase: “Did you know?”

Did you know you may want to punch me in the nose by the time we’re done?

Did you know the winner of our My Memories Digital Scrapbooking Software Giveaway (chosen by Random.org) is: #10, Kelli from Eat, Pray,{Read}, Love! Congrats, girl. I’ll be contacting you very soon! : )

Did you know that you guys must be really good pray-ers because I started out my BODYCOMBAT class yesterday afternoon with the sensation of an icepick being jammed into the right side of my noggin every time I jumped or kicked, but by the second half of the class, it was gone, and this morning I woke up for the first time in over a week without a headache? (Thank you for praying).

Did you know God is awesome?! (even when He allows the headaches to continue, but still…)

Did you know that I’m ready to actually start the Try-it Tuesday part of this post? (Because I am).

Did you know that sometimes the things we run out of around the house or pay money for at the store could easily be replaced with things we have lying around the kitchen, pantry, or garage? For example…

1. Did you know that you can make buttermilk (or something close enough to it that your recipe won’t know the difference)?

I almost never have buttermilk in my fridge, which is frustrating when I get a baking urge or need to whip up a batch of cornbread for dinner (my husband is laughing because the last time we had cornbread was…too long ago to remember). But the solution is ridiculously simple:

    • One cup of milk (I’ve used skim, 2%, whole…doesn’t matter)

to

    • One tablespoon of vinegar (white) or lemon juice

Combine the two, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it curdles. Then use it in your recipe just like you would regular buttermilk.

2. Did you know you can make your own baby wipes (also wet wipes, lysol wipes, etc)?

I received a “baby wipe kit” as a shower present for Adelaide from a sweet friend, and I thought it was an incredibly clever idea! There are 5 gajillion recipes/methods out there in cyberspace, but this one looks very straightforward and simple.

3. Did you know you can whiten your teeth with Hydrogren Peroxide 3%?

I stole borrowed this idea from Mandy of Biblical Homemaking who said she could see a difference in her husband’s teeth after only two rounds of rinsing.

    • Hold a capful of HP in your mouth for several (some sources says TEN!!!) minutes, then spit (DON’T swallow).

**There is some evidence that this practice is best for short periods of time, though, since extended/constant use could actually damage cells and soften the surface of your teeth.

4. Did you know you can create chalkboard paint in any color your heart desires?

It’s true, and it’s ALL OVER THE INTERNET. Seriously, I did a google search and instantly ended up with a page full of “recipes” for chalkboard paint—all of which say essentially the same thing:

    • 1 cup of paint (any color in a flat finish)

to

    • 2 TBSP unsanded grout

via

Mix one cup at a time for best consistency, then paint away!

5. Did you know you can make your kids squeal with joy by writing them messages in the following “invisible inks?”

    • Any acidic fruit juice (lemon, orange, apple, etc.)
    • Vinegar
    • Soapy water
    • Baking soda/water paste

For all of the above, you can reveal them by exposing them to heat. Either iron the paper or place it in the oven (on temps of lower than 450 degrees…just don’t forget it’s in there!!!).

To avoid the possibilIty of burning down your house in the name of entertaining your children, you could also try the “white crayon” method from Grasping for Objectivity!

    • Write a message on a white piece of paper, using a white crayon
    • Have your child paint over the message with watercolors and watch your words “magically” appear!

FINALLY…

Did you know I’d love to hear about all the amazing tips and tricks you guys have for creating something fun or useful out of something you already have? (Because I really, really would).

  1. did you know that if you are out of egg for baking you can use 1 part oil to 2 parts water instead? p.s. careful about the hydrogen on your teeth over doing it can hurt you enamel 🙂

  2. Oh buddy, you’ve been missing out on all sorts of crafty goodness! Freezer paper is found in the section of Wal-Mart by the foil, saran, etc….It is used to wrap meat before freezing (I think). It has a white paper side and a slick plastic-coated side. It can also be used for freezer-paper stenciling….which is life-changing BTW. Just kidding, but it is a lot of fun and a great way to make cool kid t-shirts & designs 🙂
    here’s a link for ya’:

Let me know if ya’ give it a try!

Praise the Lord that your headache is gone! You must feel 10000% better!!

  3. I knew there was a way to refill foaming soap, but I didn’t know the specifics!
And the iron on thing (though I don’t actually know what freezer paper is or where to find it) sound super-cool!

Thanks for the awesome tips, Leigh Anne!

  4. Cool tips! Did you know that you can make your own “bath & body works” foaming soap? Just save the foaming soap dispenser and fill about 1/6th the way full w/ your fave body wash/dish soap and the rest with slow running HOT water. Bam….foaming soap for a fraction of the cost! Also, did you know that if you trace your sewing pattern (or piece of clothing that fits) into the paper side of freezer paper you can cut it out & iron it on your fabric (low heat) and it sticks?? Then you can cut your pattern easily w/o shifting or pattern weights. And it is good for many uses. Just peel and re-iron…..so cool!

  5. I did know about the chalk paint and it works really well.. I also knew about the peroxide. Been doing it for years. And my dentist says to use it about 4 times a week and it should do as well as if i am using it daily..

I love hearing from you guys!
