If someone were to see my closet, they might be bemused by the number of almost repeat items in it.

Don’t get me wrong.

I know plenty of people who find a shirt they like and buy it in three (or more!) colors.

That’s not me so much.

But since I started doing Thrifted or Grifted, whenever I’m perusing the clearance aisles or out thrifting, I definitely keep an eye out for cute pieces that are at least somewhat similar to something I already own so that I can then attempt to fool show them to you guys in a round of T+G.

Honestly, most of the time it’s not nearly that intentional, but I’m not going to deny that it’s usually at least in the back of my mind, which makes for some rather strange shopping strategies.

So…

What is T+G?

It’s a silly little fashion game I came up with in which I wear two similar ensembles, and you test your thrifting savvy by deciding whether an outfit is:

A) 100% Thrifted: (adj.)—previously loved and therefore ridiculously cheap…aka Secondhand

OR

B) 100% Grifted: (adj.)—swindled or cheated…aka Retail (NOTICE THE “R” IN GRIFTED! SOMETIMES, I GET EMAILS FROM PEOPLE WONDERING WHY I DO A GAME ABOUT “GIFTED” CLOTHES! : ))

…and then you vote and leave me comments telling why you chose the one you did!

(Disclaimer: No, I don’t actually think you’re getting ripped off every time you pay retail, but I do believe that if you can’t tell the difference, you shouldn’t have to pay for it).

If you’re a Thrifted or Grifted pro, then you know the drill—stand on your head, grab a magnifying glass, flip a coin…whatever it takes for you to feel fully satisfied that you have sufficiently scoured each outfit for telltale signs of thriftedness (WRINKLES DON’T COUNT!) and then comment away telling me why you chose which one you did.

The commenter I find most entertaining (there’s nothing fair or random about it! ; )) will get 5 free entries into our next giveaway.

So…

Is it:

EXHIBIT A

Well, don’t I look downright devious?

or…

EXHIBIT B:

Try not to let picture quality and lighting sway your opinion. One of these outfits was photographed with barely enough light to take a picture and the other in the morning.

Hence the blurriness.

Think you’ve got it nailed down?

Then VOTE!! (and comment…don’t forget that : ))

  2. This one was hard for me to decide, ha I love them both, colors look great on you by the way 🙂 I have to guess, A is thrifted and B is grifted!

  3. I’m going with B….because….I don’t know…but you FABULOUS….and the turkey timer (what my family always calls a prego belly button) just adds to your fabulousness!

  4. Oh my gosh- when I voted it was exactly 50/50. I think B is thrifted…this is because the dress style in exhibit a has really only just started to be in high circulation amongst stores, so potentially not long enough to have been donated to an op shop?

  5. I voted A because your belly looks like a cute Mickey Mouse head, and I love Disney! And because the earrings in B look too good to be thrifted. 🙂

  6. Ok Abbie – here we go again… I dont think I have ever got this right – and I have been playing this game with you for a while now.. I believe in my expressed expert opinion that B is thrifted. Which will mean of cause that I am WRONG. My reasons for selecting B are as follows… 1, the dress although colourful (and you do love colour) is a tad short, 2, the bag (we call them armpit bags in aussie), and 3 the shoes, you always find great discount shoes. So there you have the 1,2,3 of it all. Take care of your little family 🙂

  7. I am choosing A as thrifted because my daughter has the pink maxi in B and I know she recently bought it so I don’t think it’d be at a thrift store just yet…I am proud to say that I bought my first maxi for myself recently…yeah, I thought I was too old for one, but I found one that looks great on me, if I do say so myself. And what did I do with it after wearing it just once? I gave it to my beautiful daughters who live about five states away from me…Oh, well, they come back home in November and I’m for sure telling them to bring home the maxi so I can wear it again.
I’m just gonna have to email you a picture of my in my maxi… formerly my maxi or the maxi formerly known as mine.

  8. OY! I didn’t get to be first and I know I can’t be funny TWO “thrifted or grifteds” in a row…in addition to that impossibility, I still have no confidence that I can pick the right outfit…however, being a guessing game addict, I have to participate anyway 🙂 I mean, it IS for 5 free entries and typically I’ll play a game for nothing, knowing I have a very slim chance of even winning, yet I keep at it…playing the games, playing the games…sigh…I digress…

ALAS, I’m saying outfit A is thrifted because I am the type that will pay for almost every maxi I see that has an empire waist and that ruffle at the bottom, as seen in exhibit B…I just love that look, and you prove the point that pregnant with 2 humans or not, it’s a Fan-tab-u-lous look 🙂 Love it!

    And…I’m done 🙂

  9. Well, you’ve done it again, I really don’t have a clue! I chose B because to be honest,It won a fair game of ennnie-mennie-minney-moe, and because I am completely dumbfounded so I just chose B because I like the letter better. Is that normal? (Gosh, I hope so!)

  10. Oh my goodness you are the cutest little belly-full-o-baby thing that I ever have seen! Looking GOOD, girlfriend. You rock those babies!

I voted A. Mostly because I LOVE the bag and hope that you found it at an absolute steal. Am I right or WHAT???

  11. P.S. I’m seriously annoyed with the typos I just noticed in my comment. “I still think IT could be”. And “crossED” not crosses. Sheesh!

  12. Its B. it has to be B. Becuase I’m your mother and I said so. Oh. Wait. Sorry, habit. I’m not your mother. But I still think could be B, mostly because of the crosses empire bust line.

  13. I just voted that A was thrifted, because all of the accessories on B are so rad that no one in their right mind would get rid of them. BUT, now I’m thinking you would never spend the money to buy those full price and you obviously have the best GW in the world and B is the thrifted outfit. Arghhh!

  14. okay i love the earrings in B so much! so i don’t think that anyone would give those up to a charity shop! and thank you so much for not making any negative comments about your beautiful pregnant self! that is so refreshing.

  15. I guess that A is 100% thrifted which probably means I am a 100% wrong. I just feel backwards. Like if I guessed B,it would have been A. O well:) I love this game! I guess I vote A because of the shoes and the tank. Idky but thats my vote!

  16. I’m not totally sure why I think B is thrifted, but I think the purse was my final determining factor… who would give up that first purse?! Not me! Although I have got some pretty amazing purses at thrift stores… I’m torn!

  17. The ruffle gives it away, it’s totally B. But the color is fantastic, so I’d totally bite on that one – and lop off that darn ruffle. LOL!

  18. I’m going with A. B fits you like a maternity dress, but A is too big in the chest (give it a few months, right?), hence the uber-low neckline, and the need for a tank underneath. Because you’re modest you wore a tank with both, but if your hubby is like mine, he’s wishing you skipped the tank…on both. *wink*

So yes, I am basing my guess on your bust-line. It’s my bust (er, best) guess. 🙂

  19. OOoohh! I got this. Item B is thrifted. Yes? Am I right? Tell me I’m right. Something about the bottom of the pink dress tells me this. And also my womanly intuition/genius.

  20. I have no idea but I want to play so I’ll guess! I think A is grifted, B is thrifted and the belly button is 100% God given!!!

  21. I think A is thrifted. I can’t see the shoes in this one and option B has nice shiny shoes 🙂

  22. I think option A is thrifted. Something about the cut and what I can see of the shoes makes me vote that way. Plus dress A looks like it used to have belt loops or a tie or something that isn’t there anymore….I adore those earrings though!!!

  23. I choose B as the thrifted item. I am only saying this because I feel like I own dress A and I am going to be extremely mad (slightly embarrassed) if I paid full price and it is now in a thrift store!

  24. My guess is outfit B is thrifted, the hem is a tad short and I’m guessing if you were to pay retail for it you would want it all the way to your shoes like outfit A.

  25. I am going to say that A is the gifted outfit and B is the thrifted outfit… because…. A is the new “tank style” maxi that came out to be the “it” thing this year, and B the cut is more classic and has been around longer, thus making me think it would be circulating the thrift section more then the “new just in this season” style…. just my thinkin, though I am ALWAY wrong I swear haha!

  26. I voted that A was thrifted, but so far I am in the minority. I went with A because of the fit at the top of the dress. It seems a little low even if you were planning on layering. I also think the shoes in B look grifted, but I cannot see the shoes in A very well. Sorry I am kinda rambling.

  27. Well first off, your hair is to die for – love those messy curls! I also love those glasses! You’re just adorable mmk? 🙂
I have no idea which outfit it thrifted, but my guess is the 1st one – something about the purse says thrift to me, but in a good way. Or maybe I am just partial to pink which is why I think you bought it… 🙂 Anyway, love this game!

  28. I am voting for option B as thrifted. I have no reason other than I can’t imagine anyone giving up that fabulous bag in option A! And I’m not a “big bag” kinda gal! I usually get these wrong, so I’m sure it’s option A, but hey, can’t fault a girl for trying!
Oh, and you look so great!!

I love hearing from you guys!
