Thrifted or Grifted–Apricot tops + Skinnies + Neutral Wedges

So, I had to do a search on my own blog to find the last time I indulged in a round of Thrifted or Grifted, and even though I knew it had been a while, I was honestly surprised it had been THAT long. 2 years and 4 months, folks.

Whuuuut?

So, why the lapse?

Well, a couple of reasons, really. 1) I don’t do a whole lot of traditional thrifting anymore. Even when I had 5 kids, and the twins were tiny, it was still worth it to me to hit up Goodwill on the regular, but…well, they closed down my favorite hole-in-the-wall-with-all-the-best-stuff Goodwill, and the local thrifting grounds just haven’t been the same since.

Thank goodness for ThredUP, though. (Use that link to get $10 off your first order if you’re so inclined).

And 2) I just don’t do a lot of fashiony posts here anymore. Not sure why that changed exactly (and feel free to weigh in if you’d like to see more), but it’s just sort of fallen by the wayside since I stopped having a “wardrobe” theme for Wednesday.

BUT.

I was going through my closet the other day and noticed that I had several items that were similar enough to throw together a good ol’ round of T+G, and–what can I say?–I guess I was feeling nostalgic because here we are.

thrifted or grifted collage

So, for those of you uninitiated, what IS Thrifted or Grifted?

Thrifted or Grifted is a silly little fashion game I came up with in which I wear two similar ensembles, and you test your thrifting savvy by deciding whether an outfit is:

A) 100% Thrifted: (adj.)—previously loved and therefore ridiculously cheap…aka Secondhand

OR

B) 100% Grifted: (adj.)—swindled or cheated…aka Retail (NOTICE THE “R” IN GRIFTED! SOMETIMES, I GET EMAILS FROM PEOPLE WONDERING WHY I DO A GAME ABOUT “GIFTED” CLOTHES! : ))

…and then you vote and leave me comments telling why you chose the one you did!

(Disclaimer: No, I don’t actually think you’re getting ripped off every time you pay retail, but I do believe that if you can’t tell the difference, you shouldn’t have to pay for it).

If you’re a Thrifted or Grifted pro, then you know the drill—get out that magnifying glass you’ve got in some drawer somewhere and procrastinate on those dishes a bit longer as you scrutinize the minutiae of each outfit (WRINKLES DON’T COUNT!) and then comment away telling me why you chose which one you did.

The commenter I find most entertaining (there’s nothing fair or random about it! ; )) will get 5 free entries into our next giveaway (coming soon!).

Alrighty, enough explanation…here we goooooo!

Is it…

option a

t+g5

t+g3

{Because I know y’all hardcore T+G-ers appreciate the profile angle so you can scrutinize for shoe-size gaps}

Or…

option b

t+g2

P.S. Ezra is now my photographer. He does a great job. Except for when he cuts off part of my shoe. I promise I’m not trying to obscure your view here.

Oh! And just because Miss Evy-Lou was rather poorly/clingy and wobbled all the way down our gravel driveway in those plastic “princess flipper shoes” (aka: death to all toes with which they come in contact), I’ll include this oh-so-attractive picture of the both of us.

So, what do you think? Have you made your decision?

Well, then vote away! And don’t forget to comment telling me why you chose the one you did!

Thrifted or Grifted Results—Skinnies + Drapey Sweaters + Patterned Shoes

I  had planned  on popping in to share the results of Wednesday’s Thrifted or Grifted yesterday, but it just didn’t happen (so many distractions and unplanned “stuff” are tied up in that phrase, as I’m sure you well know).

That said, as always, I LOVED reading all your fun, creative, nice comments here and on Instagram and Facebook.

I took them all into consideration when choosing the “winner” of the 5 free entries into our upcoming giveaway, and I couldn’t choose just one, so I broke them up into categories.

But first, I should tell you which outfit was thrifted and which was grifted.

thrifted or grifted results

Jeans: GAP/GW, $5
Top: J. Crew Factory/GW (with tags till on), $4
Sweater vest: Banana Republic/GW $4
Shoes: Mossimo (free from clothes-swap), $0
TOTAL: $13
Jeans: Old Navy, $12
Top: J. Crew Factory, $8
Sweater: J. Crew Factory, $9
Shoes: Old Navy, $8
TOTAL: $37

I wasn’t trying to tell you the answer in my original pic, but it was actually labeled correctly.

A was Thrifted.

B was Grifted.

In case you were wondering, 62% of you guessed that A was thrifted, citing everything from the slightly more worn out knees to the “sag” in the pockets of the sweater vest. In other words, you took my charge to scrutinize closely veeeerry seriously. Well done, you!

OH! And since I couldn’t choose, I broke up my favorite comments into three categories:

1) The Nicest AND Most Apologetic:

I definitely think b is thrifted, I always hate saying my reason why because I’m afraid I’ll offend you:( but here goes, the shirt in option b seems a little short for your normal style. Hope that wasn’t to mean :( it’s still really cute on you;)

Erin Dickson

Erin, if that was an insult, then you can insult me all day long. You are too sweet!

2) The Most Confidently Wrong

B is thrifted … because those leopard print flats in A are so de moda!
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Maggie B

Maggie, I always love your comments, and this one was no exception. You might not have been right, but you were not right with style.

3) The Best Storyteller

I think A is thrifted because the knees look faded in a non manufactured way. Aka, faded where a Mama’s knees rub on the ground as she trails her busy kids, gets down to tie shoes and zip up coats… you know the drill. ;) Those faded knee spots are my constant nemesis in keeping jeans! And as a side note, I LOVE both pairs of shoes you are wearing!

Laura Gehris

Loved catching that glimpse into your life, Laura!

…………………………………………………………………………………

So, there have it. Another round of T+G posted, voted, and done!

I’m already looking forward to next time! :)

P.S. With all of your detail orientedness, I am VERY surprised that no one commented on one little wonky thing (about something on me, not my outfit). As in something that’s missing (sort of). How’s that for cryptic? But still, I’m curious. Can you spot it?

Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!

Oh wait. Yes, I will. Tomorrow, in fact. But for now, it’s time for you to vote!

Today’s Thrifted or Grifted is going to be entirely based on comment polling, which is brought to you care of, “Abbie couldn’t get her poll widget to install correctly for Word Press, and her techie husband is out of town.”

You can either just leave a comment saying A or B, or, if you really want to make your presence known (and get your name in the giveaway hat) explain the reasoning behind your choice.

Happy guessing!

Feature Friday FREE-FOR-ALL {#76} + Thrifted or Grifted Results + A $50 Novica Giveaway

Welp, I had the best of intentions to reveal the Thrifted or Grifted results yesterday morning, but—by golly—life just got in the way. It’s almost like it doesn’t realize I have blog-readers to update sometimes.

Hopefully, I didn’t keep you on tenterhooks for too long, though, because I am doing the big reveal this morning. Are you ready?

58% of you were convinced (or, if the comments are any indication,  marginally, somewhat, sort of, kind of leaning toward) that Option B was 100% thrifted.

And you were…

Top: LOFT/Goodwill, $3
Jeans: American Rag/Goodwill, $4
Shoes: Mia/Goodwill, $3
TOTAL: $10
Top: Kohl’s (Lauren Conrad), $12
Jeans: Old Navy, $12
Shoes: Dillards (ooooooold), $7
TOTAL: $31

RIGHT! (golf claps, all around)

Why, yes, it does look like the grifted version of me is mocking the thrifted one (who doesn’t look happy about it), but honestly, if you looked at the breakdown of the outfit costs above, I don’t really know what she’s laughing about. Yes, they’re both cheap (because I don’t do expensive), but the thrifted version is considerably cheaper, (by  2/3).

Also, I found it interesting that several of you used the fact that the thrifted pants had slits (they were actually zippers) and their washed out color as an argument for their not being current, since the exact same jeans seem to be currently available at Macy’s.

In any case, the winner of the 5 free entries into our giveaway (TODAY!) is:

Susan, who said, “I think option B is thrifted! It’s very cute, but not quite as polished as A, and I feel like maybe I have seen you wear that top before? The top in option A looks very high end, with detail I think you might be willing to pay a little more for. You look adorable in both though! Thanks for caring enough about your little readers to do one of these posts, even though you must still be tired from all of your wedding festivities. : )”

I picked her comment because a) Dude, Susan. That is some serious attention to detail. I think she might poll her uncle’s cousin’s sister’s best friend if it came to that! and b) Susan was kind enough to thank me for doing something that I absolutely love doing already (well, the dressing up part’s just okay; but the interaction with you guys is a blast!).

So…what about this here giveaway I keep mentioning?

Well, today, you have the chance to win $50 to an awesome online company called Novica. They were nice enough to partner with me once before, and I am thrilled to give you another chance to win!

They have all kinds of unique, often hand-crafted items like this fun rug:

And this pretty pearl flower necklace:

But for now, guess away! And don’t forget the best part: COMMENTING. Your reactions to these post always brighten my week, and my husband’s out of town right now, so I could really use some distraction from 24/7 solo bottom-wiping and snack-procuring (clearly, I’m not afraid to beg).

Feature Friday FREE-FOR-ALL {#65} + Thrifted or Grifted Results

Well, I didn’t mean to leave you hanging for so long on the results of Wednesday’s Thrifted or Grifted post, but even now, with the “big” reveal, I feel a little silly since I don’t even know what the poll results were.

Why? Well, I left it up so you could see for yourself there in the left-hand upper corner. Do you see what I see? (do you see what I seeeeeee?)

16 votes. Okay, folks, we average more like 250-300 votes. Plus, at some point on Wednesday, it said 70. Then it said 22. Then it was back up to 60. And then back down to 35. And then it ended at 16.

So, apparently, the poll widget had a really bad day. A really bad, really confused day.

Which means that I have no idea which outfit y’all thought was 100% thrifted (unless I go by the general consensus from the comments, and that was A).

So, I’ll just tell you:

thrifted or grifted collage

Top: Old Navy/Goodwill, $3
Skirt: Charlotte Russe/GW, $4
Shoes: Wet Seal/GW, $5
Earrings: GW, $2
Belt: Merona/GW, $0 (came with some pants)
TOTAL: $14
Top: Gap, $10
Skirt: Forever 21, $17
Shoes: Kenneth Cole Reaction, $12
Earrings: ???
Belt: Came with skirt
TOTAL: $39

Both of those pictures crack me up because I look like I’m busting a move in the thrifted outfit, and I’m giving the toothiest, fakest-looking grin ever in the grifted one.

I guess no matter what I wear, where I got it, or what I paid for it, I can still be a goofball.

So…were you right?  Even if you were, I guess we’ll never know whether you were in the majority. (Apparently, I’ll need to sweet-talk Paula the Poll Widget next time to make sure she doesn’t go all haywire on me again).

Oh, and how is everyone doing on your 30-day Husband Encouragement Challenge?

It took me a while to pray through everybody’s name the other day, there were so many of you! Yay!

Either way, I love them!

Wardrobe Wednesday: Thrifted or Grifted—Ivory Tees + Floral Skirts

Oh, y’all. I am so blessed by your response to yesterday’s post. To know that I have that kind of back-up and to hear from some of you that you’ll be praying for me too? So, so exciting! I am so ready to see how God changes our hearts and blesses our husbands this month!

P.S. If you’re not married but still want to participate, feel free to choose somebody or multiple somebodies who could use some encouragement this month and jump on in! Yes, you’ll have to modify some of the specifics for the daily challenges, but the way I see it, encouraging others is always a good thing (and I bet they’d agree).

P.P.S. Oh! And someone much more tech-savvy than I asked if I was going to choose a hashtag for our challenge so that if you want to join in on the Instagram accountability updates that I mentioned yesterday, you can tag your posts, and we can all see how we are doing. And I thought, “That’s fantastic! Now, what in the world would the hashtag be?” And in a moment of complete originality and brilliance, I decided to use: #30daystohappyhubby

I know, right? That took a lot of thought.

Anyhoo, just in case you’re not familiar with how hashtags work, if you post a picture of, for example, a note you wrote your husband or a sweet memory with him or a meal you cooked, etc., then you’ll caption it however you want and add our #30daystohappyhubby hashtag so that, whenever someone else wants to see how all us Husband Encouragers are doing, they can just search for that tag, and every post under it will show up.  Make sense? I think it’ll be loads of fun to see what kind of creative ideas we all come up with. I’m ready to be inspired!

P.P.P.S. Several of you expressed doubt about knowing how to do this right or whether it would work. And I completely get that. But I really think the thing here is obedience. Just do it! It’s going to be a little weird for me because my husband knows I’m doing it this time, which means he’ll know why I’m making extra efforts, but I’m just going to push through the awkwardness and do what I know God is calling me to do. And, as far as knowing what to do, the challenge outline is awesome about giving you guidelines and even specific suggestions for how to accomplish each day’s goal. It doesn’t have to be huge or momentous every time (or ever). Even just a hug and a, “You’re so amazing at _____________” can go a long way.

P.P.P.P.S. ……nope, I done.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Moving on to today’s order of business (which is mondo-trivial in comparison with bettering our marriages) it’s been a while since we’ve done a round of Thrifted or Grifted. And I thought it might be time to bring it back!

{The placement of the words on that title are in no way indicative of which outfit belongs in which category. Or are they? Tricky}

Here we go with:

EXHIBIT A

IMG_0173

If you’re feeling jealous of my sandal-clad feet, I  feel the necessity to point out that, while the temps are certainly mild here compared to many parts of the country, my poor husband was shivering while he snapped these shots (in his oh-so-official work attire of a t-shirt and shorts), and my toes were getting nipped by the chilly air.

IMG_0178

Speaking of toes, I wanted to make sure you got a view of the footwear from all angles. I know you guys get all fussy about the shoes.

And now for:

EXHIBIT B

IMG_0188

As side note, my hair is getting out of control, and my “bangs” are completely unmanageable. Which, I guess, means I should get a haircut. But finding time to schedule a hair appointment without the kids with me is increasingly problematic, and a haircut with all 5 kids with me is even more problematic. Hum. I guess I could start cutting my own hair. But then I couldn’t do Wardrobe Wednesday anymore. Or ever go out in public again. And that would be most problematic of all. I do believe that this is what they call a first world dilemma.

IMG_0197

And yet another side note (because life without tangents is a very dull life, indeed): when I reappeared in my husband’s office wearing EXHIBIT B, he looked at me in consternation for a moment and then said, “Oh, I guess those are different clothes, huh?”

They most certainly are.

Okay, so have you over-analyzed to your heart’s content? If so, then VOTE!

5 Things Thursday: Comments + Thrifted or Grifted Results—Dresses + Denim Jackets

I’ve said it before, and I doubt I’ll stop saying it as long as I write this blog: I abso-flippin’-lutely love reading your Thrifted or Grifted comments.

{And all your other comments for that matter; I read every single last one}

My husband said something the other day…to the effect of: “You have really good commenters.”

And I couldn’t agree more.

Seriously.

Y’all are so funny and expressive, and it puts a big ol’ grin on my face every single time I get a new comment notification.

My husband also pointed out that yesterday’s comments were so lively and detailed that I was going to have a hard time choosing my favorite.

And he was right again (that man knows his stuff).

So, I figured I wouldn’t limit myself to just one favorite comment today but instead choose 5 (since it’s 5 Things Thursday and all), and in the process answer some questions and extend some thanks—sort of a multiple bird-killing with one stone kind of thing (wow, that sounded violent).

1.

Tiffany Martha said:

“Wow-wee… you look amazing. my gut is telling me A is thrifted. my gut is also telling me I want a cupcake… but I’m trying to ignore that! :)

Okay, so I mostly chose this comment because of the cupcake part (girl, I feel ya; I just ate 5—FIVE—oreos!!), but lest you think me egotistical for choosing to feature a comment that starts with compliment to me…let me ‘splain.

(No, is too much; let me sum up : )):

Historically, I am terrible about taking compliments. Like, truly awful. I have been known to argue with the complimenter about why I’m not deserving of the compliment.

And that’s just annoying.

I’ve gotten better, but I still somehow feel that, if I don’t think I deserve the compliment, or if I just say thank you, I am somehow being either a) untruthful or b) arrogant.

{Overthinking it much?}

So, I’m working on getting better at just saying thanks.

And that’s what I’m doing now.

Y’all have been SO incredibly sweet, encouraging, and just downright stinkin’ awesome about your comments on my post-twins figure in Wardrobe Wednesday posts that, even though I feel a bit look-at-me for bringing it up, I also feel like I would be rude not to acknowledge how much of a self-esteem boost they’ve been and how greatly appreciated they are.

So, yeah…

THANK YOU!

There, I said it. : )

Clearly, I’m terrible at this guessing, but I’m going w/ B. Not sure why….just gotta gut feeling. Or is that hunger…..not sure!
Either way, you are looking great Hot Mamma!
(And maybe I’ll get picked for best comment due to my overuse of exclamation points!!) ;)

I’m sensing a theme—apparently reading T+G makes you guys hungry (is there some sort of food hidden in the pattern of my dress that’s sending out subliminal messages?).

And I just can’t resist featuring Leigh Anne’s comment because a) it’s funny and cute and has an overabundance of exclamation points, and b) Leigh Anne is one of my nicest, most incredibly uplifting readers who never fails to put a smile on my face with her comments.

Sadly, even though we live in the same state, we are still 10 hours away from each other. Darn your ginormousness, Texas!

“i voted b is thrifted because a) i remember the saga of the jean jacket that you’re wearing in a (and it was a good one) b) i really hope i can just go out and buy those shoes in a and not have to find them in a thrift store because in these parts they’d be hard to come by and c) i really like your hair. that has nothing to do with anything i just wanted you to know.”

I chose Emily’s comment because a) she was one example of several of you who remembered the jeans jacket saga, and I’m so impressed she (and the rest of y’all) were paying such close attention, b) I felt the need to publicly apologize to her for her inability to find those shoes anywhere but a thrift store, and c) she was one of several to comment on my hair in this post, so I wanted to say THANKS and give the link to the post I wrote about how I style it since I had at least one other commenter ask me whether it’s naturally curly (yes).

“I’m choosing B as thrifted because the dress is a little shorter than you generally wear, and I can imagine you having a somewhat limited view of the mirror in Goodwill, what with the shopping cart, Della, the boys, (I’m assuming you bought this prior to twins) and whatever “distractions” you brought to keep said children amused.”

At least one other person commented on the length of the dress in B, so I figured I would explain: I actually bought it without trying it on and have only ever worn it in the photos from the post.

But thank you so much for giving me the benefit of the doubt, Judy, because the explanation you gave actually makes total sense and makes me feel like I’ve got a thrifting cyber-friend, which is fun!

All five of you are getting 5 entries into our next giveaway…I hope one of you wins!

OKAY…

So, my poll went totally haywire and ended up saying that I only had 9 votes. (Which is off by a couple hundred at least).

But, no matter what the number said, the percentage consistently indicated that majority of you guys thought that OPTION B was thrifted.

So…

Were you right?

Collages4

Dress: Target ($13)
Jacket: Old Navy ($18)
Shoes: Urban Outfitters ($20)
TOTAL: $51
Dress: Goodwill ($6)
Jacket: Abercrombie and Fitch/Ebay ($23)
Shoes: Fioni/GW ($6)
TOTAL: $35

Nope. Sorry.

It was A.

Also, I’m sorry about the confusion of the Ebay jacket.

I was not trying to trick you. And I debated whether I should use it, but since it is a secondhand item, even though I did not get it from a thrift store, I decided to go with it (notice I actually paid more for it than I did my Old Navy jacket…mostly because of shipping).

SO!

This post is getting pretty darn long, but I had one more question for you:

Should I keep the Old Navy jacket?

I know, I know.

I’m all about asking you guys whether I should keep jeans jackets, but it fits a little strangely through the shoulders, and now that I see it in pictures (instead of just a fitting room mirror), it looks a little strange too.

Thoughts?

I’ve even included another poll, which hopefully will work in its intended fashion this time.

Should I keep the grifted jacket?

Wardrobe Wednesday: Thrifted or Grifted—Dresses + Denim Jackets

Hey there, folks!

Thrifted or Grifted is baaaaaaack!

Which means I must be feeling better if I got dressed in not one but two outfits (including heels!).

I am.

Thanks so much for your sweet comments, emails, and prayers!

Okay, so if you’re a Thrifted or Grifted regular, then you’ve probably already skipped past all this and are busy scrutinizing every last detail of the outfits.

But just in case you’re new here, here’s the breakdown:

If you’re a Thrifted or Grifted pro, then you know the drill—put your computer on the floor and then look at it while doing downward dog or standing on your head…whatever it takes for you to feel fully satisfied that you have sufficiently scoured each outfit for telltale signs of thriftedness (WRINKLES DON’T COUNT!) and then comment away telling me why you chose which one you did.

The commenter I find most entertaining (there’s nothing fair or random about it! ; )) will get 5 free entries into our upcoming giveaway (very soon!):

So…

Is it?

OPTION A

{Ignore the bag; I’ll go ahead and tell you that it’s thrifted, since I was planning on carrying it with both outfits with the disclaimer that you shouldn’t factor it into your decision…and then I decided on a different Option B that didn’t coordinate with the bag, but I was way too lazy to retake the pics of Option A without the bag; make sense? not really? Sorry about that}.

Or…

OPTION B

{Clearly, zero remnants of my summer “tan” are lingering on my uber-pasty skin}

Okay, so if you’re tired of squinting, how about you go ahead and vote?

I’ll leave the poll open until 8 AM tomorrow since I’m posting later than usual.

Which outfit is 100% Thrifted?
