Thrifted or Grifted is BAAAAAACK.

After a bit of a respite (during which time I ripped my closet apart, trying to find new specimens to fool you guys with show you)…it’s that time again.

If you’re new to T+G, you may be wondering, “What time is she talking about, exactly, and what in blue blazes is Thrifted or Grifted??!”

Well, it’s the fashion game where you test your thrifting savvy by deciding whether an outfit is:

A) 100% Thrifted: (adj.)—previously loved and therefore ridiculously cheap…aka Secondhand

OR

B) 100% Grifted: (adj.)—swindled or cheated…aka Retail

…and then you vote and leave me comments telling why you chose the one you did!

(Disclaimer: No, I don’t actually think you’re getting ripped off every time you pay retail, but I do believe that if you can’t tell the difference, you shouldn’t have to pay for it).

If you’re a Thrifted or Grifted expert, then you know the drill—strain your eyes (please don’t send me your glasses prescription bill) inspecting each outfit for telltale signs of thriftedness (WRINKLES DON’T COUNT!) and then comment away telling me why you chose which one you did.

The commenter I find most entertaining (there’s nothing fair or random about it! ; )) will get 5 free entries into our $50 Cutting Edge Stencils Giveaway! (Go check it out if you haven’t already!…please?)

DISCLAIMER # 2: Try not to let the quality of the pictures sway your opinion one way or another. Remember. Bad pictures are not indicative of where I bought an outfit…just of the fact that it started raining literally 30 seconds before I was about to walk out the door for pics when wearing Exhibit B.

2012-01-25

And yes, if the picture quality discrepancy is making you twitch a little, it is me too. I thought about asking God to stop the rain for me.

But I suppose one could argue that it’s not the absolute best idea to petition the Lord for rain stoppage—when it would take like 4,567 inches of rain to catch us up from last year’s drought—just so I can take Thrifted or Grifted pics

I mean, if you’re going to get all picky about it anyway.

A few more shots:

EXHIBIT A:

This hairdo might look complicated (or it might not, depending on how skilled you at doing your own hair without looking), but it’s really just an inside-out French braid that continues all the way around my head in a “crown.”

For the inside-out part, you do the exact same process as a traditional French braid, except that instead of wrapping strands over each other, you tuck them under. Keep braiding all the way around until you completely run out of hair and then tuck the tail of your braid into the start of the French braid and secure it with bobby pins.

Simple as eating an entire pint of Rocky Road all by yourself (which I’ve only heard is easy, since I’ve never done it, of course…ahem…actually, come to think of it, I don’t know that I have ever done it…that one’s going on the bucket list!).

Aaaaand sad, forlorn, rained on, very badly lit…

My expression kind of says it all.

Okay, time to tally the votes AND leave the comments.

Which outfit is 100% Thrifted?

P.S. Don’t forget that this week’s “Getting to Know You” theme is:

are you for real

This is your chance to tell me anything quirky, unusual, unbelievable or unexpected about little ‘ol you.

  1. What a very fun game! I definitely can’t be sure on either one. My gut says that at least the jacket in A is thrifted, because the cuffs definitely look rolled like they don’t quite fit. However, pretty sure the pants in B are super similar to something we sold in the Limited about 6 years ago. I’m excited to see which was which though.:)

  2. I choose A as thrifted. The bottom hem of the jeans is frayed and the jeans on B have that just-out-of-the-storeroom-I’ll-never-get-these-wrinkles-out look.

  3. I vote A. There’s just something about the jacket that just suggests you may have pieced it together from a great thrift find. Love your hair as well!

  4. What a fun blog!!! Love it! Thank you for stopping by Harrison Home and for the invite to your party! I will definatley be linking up!! And I am going with A based on the fraying of the bottom of the trouser jeans and the lighter wash…

  5. What a fun blog!!! Love it! Thank you for stopping by Harrison Home and for the invite to your party! I will definatley be linking up!! And I am going with A based on the fraying of the bottom of the trouser jeans and the lighter wash…

  6. Here goes my first try at Thrifted or Grifted. You thrifted A. The jacket pockets are dated, the shoulders a little to wide, like they use to have shoulder pads there were removed. The black lining and black buttons are out of sink. Today’s jackets would match the jacket color better in my inimitable estimation.
Now for the jeans. I love the dressy look of them. The little bit of fraying of the cuffs is quite the rage these days, but I don’t think intentional fraying goes with the dressier style of the pants. Therefore, I say they were worn a little too long (as in length) on a shorter person. I really don’t understand why anyone would want to shred the hem of nice dressy style jeans.

  7. I voted A because of the over-arching 70’s/my grandma’s closet in a bad way look of the blazer. Also, the hem of the pants on A looks a little stepped on.

  8. Oh man this is tough! I chose A – because the blazer looks too big, it’s not fitted to your frame in the waist, and because the bottom of the jeans are a little “walked on” looking. Who knows? Well, you do I guess. 🙂

  9. Well I LOVE them both!!! And I agree that you do look awfully smug in A and that those shoes are very very very very..did I mention VERY cutie patootie! That being said..I really don’t know why I am going with B but I am. So there. My brain told me to so I did. It is B. This is my first time to do this and I really hate to be wrong….It is B right?

  10. TOTALLY going with Outfit A as thrifted. Why? Because I like it. And the ones I like tend to be the ones that are thrifted, you sneaky, thrift-clad vixen! Perhaps it’s the smug look on your face in your thrifted attire? Unsure … but definitely going with outfit A.

  11. This one was a toughie. I chose B.

In Exhibit A, the blazer looks like it came from a power suit and since most people don’t wear suits it is probably thrifted. But then I saw the shoes and thought no woman in her right mind would give up such awesome shoes so the outfit must be grifted. The two cancelled each other out so I went with Exhibit B. Makes total sense.

  12. OK, OK…I’ve never actually gotten one of these right (darn you, grifting thrifter!), BUT I’m going with A…becaaaaaaause (*tries to make something up*) the cut of the jeans seems more dated…? And because you WOULD find adorable polkda dotted shoes at a thrift store!

  13. Okay first let me say that I just TOTALLY messed up on the Voting Button above.. I meant to CIRCLE B and accidentally CIRCLED A… Are there Do OVERS in this Test…??? Okay now onto my Take… I am Completely going out on a LIMB here ( which is kinda scary being on a LIMB ) But I am going with “B” being the Thrifted one Because Who in their RIGHT mind would get rid of EXTREMELY CUTE Polka Dot Shoes…. So “B” it is!!!

  14. I’m voting for B. Comparing the pictures of A and B, I noticed that there’s no good shot of exhibit B’s blazer. And it looks a tiny bit small (is that even possible? Did you get it in the kid’s section?) on you, as if it doesn’t fit quite right. Also, the fact that you’re wearing a scarf for a belt – a spring scarf no less – that just seems like a goodwill find to me. And then there’s the pants. I love them. But the wide legs seem a little out of date, so either you’ve had them a while or they’re a goodwill find.

That’s my reasoning. In the interest of full disclosure, I have almost no fashion sense whatsoever, so I actually don’t know what I’m talking about. Ha!

  15. Without looking at other people’s comments–I think outfit A is thrifted. It’s the little lacy shirt inside and the black cuffs of the gray jacket. Seems 90’s express to me. But I like the whole outfit and your hair is adorable!

    Edie

  16. I voted A…the jeans were a teeny bit frayed on the bottom (but I have lots of jeans that aren’t frayed that are thrifted and store bought ones that are a mess, so I could be completely wrong here). Love both looks, especially the fab dark wash exhibit B jeans.

  17. I vote Exhibit A. Jacket looks a little boxy and dated, I think I actually had a similar in HS (and I wish I still had it now!!) Jeans are a little ragged on the bottom. I have a similar belt as what is in exhibit A, that I also got at GW. I remembered my mom having one of those belts when I was little, so I think you may have gotten yours at GW. But…the shoes..oh my…you have the best luck with shoes at GW!!! I LOVE both outfits and I wish my hair was thick enough to do a braid like that 🙁 I love thrifted/gifted, thanks for doing it this week, I was so excited to see it!!

  18. I agree. The cut of the blazer, and the lighter wash and slightly higher rise on the jeans – I definitely think Exhibit A is the thrifted outfit. And it looks fantastic!

  19. I voted exhibit A and here is why…the jacket looks like it may be some sort of old-school polyester blend and the big square pockets make me think of a jacket I almost thrifted a couple of weeks ago. I was thinking I would resize the pockets or simply take them off because when I asked my mom what she thought of the jacket, she said, “It’s looks a little dated.” I also chose exhibit A because I noticed that the buttons on the jacket are not the same color as the coat. Most older coats will have fabric colored buttons or buttons with such a strange looking color that you will never, ever be able to match it up if you lost one. This leads me to believe that new buttons may have been added to this coat because it may have been missing one or more, or you simply wanted to update it. I think the polka-dot shoes may have been one of your Goodwill specials (They do have a good selection of shoes!). My reasoning is that the shoe looks like it may be satin. (I do like them though, so if you plan to sale them anytime soon please drop me an email). 🙂

  20. I usually just vote and don’t comment, but the shoes made me do it. The shoes in Exhibit A would be WAY too expensive if you bought them brand new. . . and after reading about you and the nails yesterday, you definitely bought them at GW 🙂 I LOVE THEM! 🙂 Cute outfits – both of them!

  21. And I just realized I put exhibit B when I meant EXHIBIT A!!! Chock that up to the-commenter-is-at-work-and-not-paying-attention syndrome. So I am voting for EXHIBIT A!

  22. I went with exhibit B merely because of the slightly frayed bottoms on the jeans. That is truly the only reason I have for voting for B because I’m with you — I often can’t tell a difference between thrifted or retail so why pay full price for something that you can get cheaper elsewhere? Who cares if it’s a little older and has (maybe) already been worn??

  23. I’m saying A only because of the jacket. I think it looks like a piece from a suit (but that’s just me!). I absolutely love those polka-dotted heels though!!!

  24. I’m going with outfit B because the shoes looks a little vintage (and therefore totally awesome!) Still not 100% as usual…total cuteness though!

  25. I suspect that outfit B is thrifted. Those pants look a little short-waisted aka- very low rise. I think that the fashion right now is to come up a little higher on the body(no- I am no fashion expert). Although now that I look again, I guess both pairs look low-rise…..oh well I still go with B for thrifted. You look very nice in both, by the way 🙂

I love hearing from you guys!
