spitfire grill

(1996)

{Interesting detail courtesy of www.blockbuster.com: a small independent film, The Spitfire Grill received its initial funding from a group of Roman Catholic priests who favored its redemptive message}.

The tagline for this indie tearjerker read: “To a town with no future, comes a girl with a past.” Cliché? Why, yes, it is.  Still, it does a fair job of expressing the heart of The Spitfire Grill. Percy is, indeed, a girl with a troubled past, and Gilead, Maine is definitely not a happening joint.  But its name is symbolic (a reference to a medicinal remedy called Balm of Gilead, which, in turn, draws its name from the Bible) of the healing that Percy so desperately needs. Of course, the surly, broken inhabitants of Gilead could stand some mending themselves, and Percy, with her coon-dog accent and soulful gray eyes, just might be more of a savior than a victim.  Although this misunderstood-stranger-with-something-to-offer scenario is far from original, The Spitfire Grill manages to rise above its hackneyed roots thanks to earnest, believable performances from its very talented cast and a gut-wrenching finale that strikes a genuine emotional chord. {Keep a box of tissues nearby}.
